The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has strongly rejected the Federal Government’s proposed five percent tax on petroleum products, labeling it a “reckless proposal” and an act of “economic wickedness” against already overburdened Nigerians.
In a statement, the union warned that if implemented, the new policy would worsen the economic hardship in the country, cripple struggling businesses, and push millions of citizens further into poverty.
The TUC emphasized that Nigerians are already grappling with inflation, high energy costs, and reduced purchasing power, and introducing another layer of taxation would be unbearable.
> “The Federal Government cannot continue to use Nigerians as sacrificial lambs for its economic experiments,” the union declared.
The proposed tax has sparked outrage among citizens and stakeholders, who fear it will further escalate the cost of goods, transportation, and services, deepening the nation’s economic crisis.
As debates intensify, the TUC has vowed to resist the policy and called on the government to focus on strategies that alleviate hardship rather than impose additional burdens on the people.
