Tragedy in Yobe: 84 Killed in Devastating Bandit Attack on Mafa Community

Yobe State is reeling from one of its deadliest attacks in recent times after at least 84 people lost their lives in a brutal assault on Mafa community in Tarmuwa Local Government Area.

According to the Yobe State Police Command, about 150 heavily armed Boko Haram fighters stormed the village late Tuesday night. They arrived on more than 50 motorcycles, armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, unleashing terror on innocent residents.

The attackers set houses and shops ablaze, leaving behind widespread destruction. Survivors fled en masse to Babangida, the local government headquarters, seeking safety.

On Wednesday, the state government conducted a mass burial for the victims in Babangida, a solemn ceremony that underscored both the magnitude of the tragedy and the fragility of security in rural communities.

While many residents have since returned to Mafa, the scars of the attack remain raw. For families who lost loved ones, the devastation goes beyond burned buildings—it is a painful reminder of the urgent need for stronger security measures across Yobe and other vulnerable regions.

This incident is yet another wake-up call for Nigerian authorities to reinforce protection for rural dwellers, whose lives and livelihoods are repeatedly threatened by insurgents and bandits.
