Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully intercepted a massive consignment of illicit drugs at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
The agency confirmed the arrest of an Indian businessman, Gupta Ravi Kumar, along with three Nigerian accomplices, in connection with the seizure of 2,248,000 pills of tramadol (200mg/225mg).
How the Operation Unfolded
According to NDLEA, the pills, cleverly disguised as multivitamins, were packed in 114 cartons and declared as imports from Delhi, India. The consignment arrived in Lagos on Monday, 8 September, aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight.
However, intelligence gathering and routine checks by NDLEA operatives exposed the illegal cargo, leading to swift action and arrests.
Street Value and Threat
The Director of Media and Advocacy for NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the drugs have an estimated street value of N3.99 billion.
Tramadol, a synthetic opioid, has long been a source of concern in Nigeria due to its abuse among young people and its link to violent crimes. NDLEA continues to intensify its crackdown on drug trafficking networks, especially at major entry points like Lagos airports and seaports.
A Major Blow to Drug Cartels
This latest seizure is being described as another major victory in the fight against drug trafficking. NDLEA has vowed to prosecute those involved to the full extent of the law while sustaining pressure on international drug syndicates attempting to flood Nigeria with dangerous substances.
