Mali Drops French as Official Language After Six Decades

Mali 🇲🇱 has officially removed French 🇫🇷 as its official language, ending more than 60 years of dominance since independence.

The change follows a 2023 referendum, where citizens voted to downgrade French to a working language and instead grant 13 indigenous languages — including Bambara, Fula, Songhay, Dogon, and Tamasheq — official status.

While largely symbolic in governance, the move carries deep meaning. It reflects Mali’s effort to shed colonial influence and reinforce its cultural identity, placing local heritage and languages at the heart of national pride.
