The Federal High Court in Abuja will today (Monday) hear an application filed on behalf of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, seeking his transfer from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to the National Hospital, Abuja, for urgent medical attention.
The motion, which was filed on September 3 by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), cited concerns over what Kanu’s legal team described as a “worrisome decline” in his health condition while in detention.
Vacation judge, Justice Musa Liman, had earlier granted leave for the application to be entertained during the court’s annual vacation period, noting the urgency of the matter.
“I believe that the right to health is as important as the right to life. And so I agree that this matter can be heard by the vacation court,” Justice Liman stated in his ruling. He subsequently fixed September 15 for the hearing and directed Kanu’s lead counsel, Uchenna Njoku (SAN), to serve the necessary court processes on the DSS.
The outcome of today’s hearing will determine whether Nnamdi Kanu will be moved to the National Hospital, Abuja, for specialized medical care outside the DSS facility where he has been held.
