Nigerian football icon, Austin "Jay-Jay" Okocha, has addressed swirling rumours linking him with an interest in contesting for the presidency of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
In recent weeks, speculation has grown that the former Super Eagles captain might be considering a move into football administration, especially amid widespread dissatisfaction with the performance of the national team. Fans and pundits alike have voiced their frustration over the Super Eagles’ poor run of form, sparking debates on whether a leadership change at the NFF could bring about the much-needed revival.
Okocha, widely celebrated for his dazzling skills and leadership on the pitch, has now responded to these claims. While acknowledging the passion Nigerians have for football and the concerns raised over the state of the game, he clarified his stance on the matter.
According to the legend, he has no official plans or intentions at this time to contest for the NFF presidency. However, he emphasized his continued commitment to Nigerian football, stating that he would always be willing to support initiatives that would uplift the sport and restore the glory days of the Super Eagles.
> “Football gave me everything I have today. I remain committed to the growth of the game in Nigeria. Leadership of the NFF is not something to be taken lightly, and for now, I have not declared such an ambition,” Okocha said.
The 50-year-old former playmaker, revered for his time with Bolton Wanderers, Paris Saint-Germain, and the Nigerian national team, remains one of the most influential figures in African football. His words are likely to calm the storm of speculation, at least for the moment.
Still, many fans believe Okocha’s experience, charisma, and deep knowledge of the game could one day make him the right man to steer the NFF in a new direction. For now, though, Okocha insists he is focused on contributing to Nigerian football in other ways — without stepping into the political arena of football administration.
