Breaking: Nigerians to Pay N500 Tax on Every N10,000 Petrol Purchase From January 2026

A new tax policy set to take effect in January 2026 will see Nigerians paying N500 as tax on every N10,000 spent on petrol consumption, according to reports.

The measure, part of the new tax law, is aimed at boosting government revenue while also encouraging a gradual shift away from overdependence on petrol.

This means that for every ₦10,000 worth of petrol purchased, consumers will incur an additional ₦500 in tax. For instance, ₦20,000 worth of petrol will attract ₦1,000 in tax.

The policy has already sparked reactions among citizens, with many expressing concerns about the rising cost of living and how this new levy could further strain household expenses.

Authorities are yet to release full implementation guidelines, but the development signals a major shift in Nigeria’s taxation framework, particularly around energy consumption.
