Trump Calls for Death Penalty in All Washington D.C. Murder Cases

President Donald Trump has said that prosecutors should seek the death penalty in all murder cases that occur in the nation’s capital.

Speaking on the issue, Trump declared:

> “Anybody murders something in the capital, capital punishment... If somebody kills somebody in the capital, Washington, D.C., we’re going to be seeking the death penalty.”

He added that while the country may not feel ready for it, the government has “no choice.”

Washington, D.C., however, does not currently have a death penalty. The D.C. City Council repealed capital punishment decades ago, and reinstating it would face significant legal and political hurdles.

The president’s remarks have already sparked debate over whether the federal government could override the city’s long-standing stance against executions.
